French, early 19th century. Matched pair of French Empire bronze mounted fauteuils, each with scrolled backrail mounted with gilt bronze berried laurel centered by gilt bronze mounts of anthemion and Egyptian mask, the block arms terminating in circular handholds with paterae rondelles on gilt bronze pharaoh bust supports, the back and seat covered in dark blue velvet with decorative nailhead trim over a palmette and rosette mounted skirt and raised on square tapered legs mounted with rosettes and terminating on front gilt bronze paw feet. Approximate height 37.5", width 22.75" (arm to arm), seat depth 19", seat height 17".
Chair A exhibits slight surface abrasions, slight surface scratches and fading to wood at arm, front left leg exhibits slight wood loss under palmette mount, left side stile and back legs also have slight wood loss, back of right stile also displays slight wood loss. Chair B exhibits surface scratches and slight chips of wood at arms, slight fading to wood within arm interiors, legs have slight surface abrasions commensurate with age and light use, arm support exhibits slight surface scratches as well commensurate with age and light use. Both structurally sound.
