French School, 18th century. "Portrait of Ninon de l'Enclos", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Painting depicts Anne "Ninon" de Lenclos (French, 1620-1705), famous Parisian author, courtesan, and patron of the arts, at bust length wearing a fine tan and blue dress with open neckline revealing her porcelain decolletage, her delicately featured face framed by curled brown hair held within a brown hooded cape that flows down her back, the figure set within an oval painted faux medallion. Circa 1930s label to verso of frame "Maison de Cadre, J. L. Peytrequin, 1, Rue de la Paix, LAUSANNE", a restoration and frame shop in Lausanne, Switzerland. Framed approximately 24 3/4" x 20", unframed approximately 20 3/4" x 16 5/8".
Note: Orphaned at an early age, Ninon, as her father nicknamed her, was determined to carry out her life unmarried and financially independent. She was a popular figure in the Parisian salons with her own home even becoming a center for the discussion of literary arts. In her early thirties she was responsible for encouraging the young Molière, and when she died she left money for the son of her accountant to buy books, a boy named François Marie Arouet who later became known as Voltaire. Lenclos took a succession of wealthy and prominent lovers, including the cousin of the king, but prided herself on having an independent income. In the 1670s she became a friend of Jean Racine, the great French playwright, and later a close friend with Françoise d'Aubigné, better known as Madame de Maintenon, the lady-in-waiting who eventually became the second wife of Louis XIV. Lenclos died at the age of 84 a very wealthy and still independent woman.
