Hand-colored aquatint engraving on wove paper, from Reise in das Innere Nord-America in den Jahren 1832 bis 1834 (Voyage in the Interior of North America), Tab. 46.
Published by Ackermann & Co., London, June 1, 1841; also issued by Arthus Bertrand, Paris, and J. Hölscher, Koblenz.
Karl Bodmer’s expedition prints, produced after his travels with Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied from 1832–34, are considered the most accurate and important visual record of Native American life in the early 19th century. This plate, “Indian Utensils and Arms,” is among the most sought-after for its breadth of ethnographic detail. This is an original first edition folio-sized engraving from the landmark series.
