Large round lidded storage basket, likely Coast Salish or related Plateau/Northwest Coast tradition, executed in fully imbricated technique. Constructed of coiled cedar root with overlay of natural and dyed bear grass, forming a continuous polychrome geometric pattern encircling the body and lid. The basket features a domed, well-fitted lid with looped handle and matching applied side handles, suggesting use as a storage or gathering container.
Imbrication—characteristic of Klickitat, Cowlitz, and Salish weavers—involves overlaying decorative strands within the stitching to create patterned surfaces.
The form, scale, and complete imbrication indicate a higher level of technical skill and place the basket within the tradition of late 19th to early 20th century.
Dimensions: 13.5” W. 9.5” High 9” diameter lid
