Middle East to Central Asia, Khazar culture, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A forged-iron sword bearing a lengthy single edge blade with a thick spine without a fuller, the spine tapering out just a few inches from the tip. The tang is uncovered but retains the rivet that once secured a wood or bone grip just under the cross guard. The condensed tang suggests this sword was meant to accommodate a single hand - presumably whilst the other wielded a shield. Size: 31.5" L x 3" W (80 cm x 7.6 cm); (blade only): 27.5" L x 1" W (69.8 cm x 2.5 cm)
