Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This large wooden zanpar, crafted in a roughly elongated octagonal shape, was used as a stamp to imprint designs onto ritual bread offerings in Tibetan Buddhism. The intricate etchings on each of the eight faces carry deep religious and auspicious significance, transferring these sacred symbols onto the dough before baking. These designs include figures, stupas, animals, zodiac creatures, Buddhist motifs, and representations of Bardo deities. Such offerings were integral to spiritual ceremonies of healing and devotion, symbolizing the transference of blessings and positive energy. Size: 14" L x 3" W (35.6 cm x 7.6 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
