West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A remarkable and rare brass bust of a horse displaying a tubular neck and a lengthy snout with huge, ovoid eyes, a bulbous nose, and an open mouth of sizable teeth. Topped by a pair of large, perky ears, the wonderful animal stands atop a pair of thick, slightly bent legs with slender wires horizontally wrapped at the end of each to delineate the hooves. A series of petite loops lines both sides of the neck and snout, while oval embellishments decorate the back of the neck. The loops are connected to 8 brass ornaments that hang below the creature's head, and the feet are connected to one another via an additional strip of brass. A verdant green patina nicely complements the gold hue of the brass. Size: 6" L x 3" W x 6.5" H (15.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 16.5 cm); 7.375" H (18.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Fragment of a larger piece. Repaired from 3 to 4 pieces with break lines visible. Some losses along break lines as well as to top of head and metal loops on snout. Some nicks and abrasions throughout. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina and earthen deposits in recessed areas.
