East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A crystal glass (over 27% lead) snuff jar crafted in the shape of a spiny, bumpy fruit - evocative of a jackfruit or lychee, both symbols of abundance and good fortune in Chinese culture. The lid is sculpted to resemble a stem and includes an attached bone spatula used for scooping the powdered snuff within. Snuff, or powdered tobacco, was introduced to China by European traders in the 17th century and quickly became popular among the Qing elite for its supposed medicinal properties. Snuff containers like this one were not only functional but also served as decorative objects and status symbols, often reflecting the craftsmanship and artistic tastes of the time. Size: 3" L x 1.5" W (7.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
