East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely carved architectural transom, or ranma, crafted from multiple joined pieces of cedar wood using traditional Japanese carpentry techniques - secured at the corners without nails through interlocking joinery. This intricate openwork panel features a dynamic composition of an eagle perched amid the gnarled branches of a pine tree, surrounded by clouds. Intended to be installed above sliding doors or between rooms, ranma panels served both functional and aesthetic roles facilitating airflow and the passage of light while showcasing masterful craftsmanship. Carved and finished on both sides, this piece reflects its intended placement in a prominent interior setting, where it would be appreciated from either side.
