Makuzu Kozan II or Miyagawa Hannosuke (Hanzan) (Japanese, 1859-1940). Porcelain rabbit incense burner. Artist's stamp on underside of base. An adorable porcelain incense burner or koro in the form of a ball rabbit or hare featuring an openwork, removable lid in the shape of a tama or Buddhist jewel. Enveloped in lustrous, white glaze, the beady eyes are delineated in a pink under glaze with additional tinges of pink on the interior of the long ears. The piece is accompanied by a wooden box known as a tomobako, which is inscribed with Japanese script translating to "white porcelain incense burner made by Kozan." A charming example showcasing the understated simplicity of Japanese utilitarian arts! Size: 5.3" L x 4.5" W x 4.3" H (13.5 cm x 11.4 cm x 10.9 cm); of tomobako: 5.75" L x 5.625" W x 5.875" H (14.6 cm x 14.3 cm x 14.9 cm)
Rabbits hold a special place in Japanese culture, symbolizing luck, longevity, and intelligence. Unlike Western traditions that associate the moon with a man or a face, Japanese folklore envisions a rabbit pounding mochi (rice cakes) on the lunar surface, a belief derived from Buddhist and Chinese legends. This "Moon Rabbit" (Tsuki no Usagi) is a beloved figure in art and storytelling. White rabbits, in particular, are considered especially auspicious. The myth of the Hare of Inaba (Inaba no Shirousagi) tells of a white rabbit who, after being tricked and harmed by sharks, is rescued and healed by the kindness of a deity, symbolizing purity, transformation, and divine favor. Rabbits also appear frequently in seasonal motifs, poetry, and even modern pop culture, reinforcing their enduring significance in Japan.
