• Lot Description
  Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A stunning gilt copper statue of the bodhisattva Maitreya, seated gracefully on a throne with feet resting upon a lotus pedestal. Maitreya is the only bodhisattva traditionally depicted with legs pendant - loosely bent in front rather than crossed - to indicate that he is the next historical figure to achieve enlightenment. He wears flowing robes adorned with gilding composed of 36.8% to 55.5% gold, with traces of orange and red pigments still visible. The legs are inlaid with turquoise stones, adding to the statue's striking beauty. The hands are positioned in the dharmachakra mudra, a symbolic gesture representing the turning of the wheel of Buddhist teachings. The base is sealed with a copper plate - oftentimes paper prayers or other offerings might be sealed inside hollow statues. Maitreya is destined to descend to Earth in the future to once again preach the dharma after Gautama Buddha's teachings have been forgotten.   Condition

  Remains of pigment on the surface. Some fading to gilt and surface abrasions. Patina and dark toning, otherwise intact and good condition. White encrustations and green oxidation on the halo.
