South Asia, India, probably southern India, ca. 20th century CE. A remarkable, hand-carved wooden sculpture of a winged deity, perhaps Garuda - the Hindu demigod and mount of Vishnu - standing atop a double-lotus pedestal, enveloped in vibrant pigments. The deity holds both arms outward as sizable, plumed wings expand from his back and a green dhoti hangs at his broad hips, highlighting his slender, narrow waist and hourglass figure. A long, floral sash swoops downward from his right shoulder, while his limbs are adorned by anklets, armbands, and bangles. An eye-shaped pendant hangs on his chest, perhaps serving an apotropaic purpose. The tang that extends from the base of pedestal indicates he was once attached to a building as an architectural feature. Size: 17" W x 30" H (43.2 cm x 76.2 cm)
