**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A hand-built pottery cuchimilco ("star gazer") figure of a hollow-molded and stylized form with painted details. This figure stands on two delineated legs with arms outstretched and the head pointed skyward. The figure is nude with an incised line around the genital area that perhaps emphasizes female anatomy, and an impressed circle on the navel indicates a belly button. The face is composed of diamond shaped eyes, a tiny slit mouth, and a protruding pinched nose with nostril openings that lead into the head, and ears with perforations as well. A small opening is located under each arm, and these holes on the face and body acted as vents during the firing process but may have held additional ornamentation. Orange, black, and beige pigments accentuate the arms and face, and decorate the tall headdress/coiffure with stripes and dots. Scholars posit that these "star gazers" were placed in tombs as companions or guardians of the deceased. Size: 9" W x 15.5" H (22.9 cm x 39.4 cm)
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, before 2000
