East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A spectacular bronze mirror of discoid form with one side previously polished to be reflective and the other featuring an intricate relief decoration. A hemispherical handle is set at the center of the relief side and fit with a horizontal drill hole for suspension. The elaborate reliefs are organized into 5 registers with the innermost and outermost rings both containing zoomorphs and the interior bands displaying zigzag motifs, vertical striations, and a series of Chinese characters. Expected softening of detail to some relief areas, as well as abrasions to reflective side. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina and light earthen deposits in some recessed areas.
