Egypt, Coptic culture, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful textile fragment comprised of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in hues of wheat, dark-orange, and espresso. The rectangular panel features a series of female dancers with elegant, flowing poses showing one raised arm, one arm draped behind, and bent legs. Each dancer is enclosed within slender columns with disc-shaped bases, a thick roof line, and broad acanthus leaves in the archways above, and beside the dancers, on one side, is an encircled plant with a thin trunk on the bottom and the top with projecting branches and leaves. The bottom fringe bears a repeating black-and-red motif with a central cream-hued panel, and the top border features a trio of orange diamonds outlined in dark pigment. An attractive example of early Coptic textile prowess! Mounted within a lucite display frame. Size (textile): 9.75" W x 8.125" H (24.8 cm x 20.6 cm); size (frame): 12.1" W x 11.125" H (30.7 cm x 28.3 cm).
