Emile Prangey (French, b. 1832). Arab Warriors on Horseback. Oil on wooden board, n.d. Signed at lower right. Hues of ochre and umber bleed across the board in this oil painting by the French artist Emile Prangey, a vignette steeped in 19th-century Orientalist allure. A turbaned Arab figure commands a dappled beige and tan steed, his stance hinting at a tense moment in a rugged, sun-kissed terrain. Emerging from the atmospheric haze behind him are other figures, suggesting a journey or clandestine meeting in a land painted with the European brush of exoticism and dramatic narrative. Prangey's work captures the texture of earth and flowing robes, inviting the viewer into a romanticized vision of the "Orient" that captivated the Western imagination. All mounted in a Period style frame with suspension wire on verso for display. Size of painting: 13.5" W x 17.5" H (34.3 cm x 44.4 cm); of frame: 19" W x 23" H (48.3 cm x 58.4 cm)
