Ong Kim Seng ( Singaporean, b. 1945). Watercolor painting of Old Chinatown in Old Singapore, 1985. Hand signed and dated on lower left. A stunning, large-scale watercolor in which Ong Kim Seng captures a view of Old Chinatown in Old Singapore. Old Singapore is the term used to refer to the city of Singapore before it became a modern independent nation state. In this painting, Ong Kim Seng depicts the unique architecture of Old Chinatown with its two-story shophouses that manifest a blend of various Victorian and Baroque architectural elements. Before the buildings, a crowd patronizes various sellers housing their wares beneath standing umbrellas. All is rendered with Ong Kim Seng's masterful command of light and shade as well as his impressive attention to detail. A very special piece by one of the most esteemed watercolorists of the 20th century who eloquently stated, "In Art, it goes beyond time and space as an artist works beyond his imagination creatively" - mounted in an attractive, custom frame. Size (sight view): 20.25" L x 28.125" W (51.4 cm x 71.4 cm) Size (frame): 31.125" L x 39.25" W (79.1 cm x 99.7 cm)
