William Grainger (British, active 1784-1793) hand-colored, copper line engraving after a painting by John Webber (British, 1750-1793), "The Death of Captain Cook by the Natives of Owhyhee". Published by C. Cooke, 1780's. Text below, "Published as the Act directs by C. Cooke No. 17 Paternaster Row, Oct. 31". An original engraving, in reduced format, skillfully executed, and hand-colored, the engraving by William Grainger after a painting by John Webber, with strong, early hand coloring. The engraving is finely executed and the coloring is vibrant, enhancing the scene tastefully. Grainger collaborated with the publisher Cooke during the late 1780s and 1790s. This composition is also in the collection of the National Library of Australia; however, it is a very rare 18th century engraving of Webber's composition. Size: plate size 6.75" W x 4.75" H (17.1 cm x 12.1 cm); 16" W x 12" H (40.6 cm x 30.5 cm) including custom double mat.

Condition
Normal toning to paper commensurate with age. Some stains to lower margin as shown. Still the image is quite vivid with strong, with early, vibrant hand coloring.
