Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Eastern Apulia/Gnathia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A lovely lekythos created in a pottery workshop in the Apulian region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to the red-figure painting technique. This example of Gnathian ware displays a fine-line netted pattern embellishing the rounded body in white pigment added to the black-slipped ground after firing. In addition, the painter took a highly-ornamental approach to the shoulder, neck, and lower body - the shoulder with white linear bands framing a yellow zigzag band and a wonderful continuous wave motif outlined in white pigment above; the neck with white vertical frets, and the lower body with orange horizontal linear bands. Oh, and let's not forget the stylized white palmette at the lower end of the handle. The form is just as elegant, boasting a stunning silhouette with a globular body, a narrow neck, a conical spout rising to a flat rim, and a curvaceous handle joining neck to shoulder, all upon a concave foot.
