Greece / Southern Italy, Hellenistic era, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE. An impressive ancient bronze helmet of the Greek Chalcidian type, distinguished by a domed crown with a prominent medial ridge running from front to back. The upper edge of the brow forms a graceful double curve, which transitions into an encircling occipital rib, reinforcing the structure while enhancing its aesthetic refinement. The front of the helmet is marked by arched, mask-like brows and cut-out eye openings, creating a striking and expressive visage. A teardrop-shaped nasal guard extends down the center of the face, offering additional nose protection. At the rear, a narrow, flared neck guard adds to the defensive utility of the piece. Articulated crescent-shaped cheek guards, hinged at the sides for greater mobility, complete the composition. These guards are finely contoured, tapering toward the lower edge, which may have been bound under the chin for added stability. The surface exhibits a silvery and a vibrant green patina developed over time. Size: 9" Diameter x 13" H (22.9 cm x 33 cm)
So named for its depiction on pottery believed to originate from the Euboean city of Chalcis, the Chalcidian helmet is lighter and less cumbersome than other Greek helmet styles. Designed to improve upon the earlier Corinthian helmet, the Chalcidian form allowed for better vision and hearing, with c-shaped repousse loops for the wearer's ears. The Chalcidian helmet remained in use throughout the era of Alexander the Great, favored by Hoplites, particularly those wielding spears. It is believed that the Chalcidian helmet eventually influenced the design of the Attic helmet, a defining style for classical warriors.
