Central America, Guatemala, Chichicastenango, K'iche' (Quiche) Maya, ca. mid. 20th century CE. A traditional ceremonial outfit worn during confradia rituals, woven from wool and richly embroidered in vivid magenta, pink, purple, and cobalt blue threads, the ensemble includes a short-sleeved jacket and matching trousers. The jacket features bold floral and spiral motifs across the chest and back, accented with fringed trim at the hem, while the trousers are adorned with radiant sunburst-style panels along the sides. In Guatemala, cofradias are indigenous religious brotherhoods - historically introduced by Spanish missionaries - that have since evolved into deeply rooted cultural institutions blending Catholic and Maya traditions. Cofradias serve as guardians of collective heritage - managing ceremonial rituals, processions, and the distinctive attire worn during these events. Size of jacket: 28.75" L x 57.5" W (73 cm x 146 cm)
