United States / Canada, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A varied group of mid-20th century booklets and ephemera focused on Alaska Native lifeways, storytelling, customs, and northern ethnography, with emphasis on first-person narratives, community publishing, and cultural documentation. Highlights include several signed items and illustrations from indigenous authors and artists. The most intriguing is the photo album by Charles Wesley Mathers (1868-1950), one of the first professional photographers in the Northwest Territories. Of interest-though unrelated to the Indigenous Arctic theme of the books - is a typewritten letter advertising The FRA: A Journal of Affirmation, issued by the Roycroft Shops in East Aurora, NY. The letter is dated 1915 and signed by Elbert Hubbard II, written just six months after the death of his father, Elbert Hubbard, the founder of the Roycroft movement, who perished aboard the RMS Lusitania. Size of Mathers' album: 11" L x 9" W (27.9 cm x 22.9 cm)
