Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A testament to exquisite craftsmanship, this bell-shaped copper vessel boasts a rich tapestry of decoration. Embossed and openwork brass forms an intricate framework, beautifully contrasting with inlays of turquoise, magnesite, blue stones, and amber-colored glass. Adding to its functionality and aesthetic are two arched, hinged handles, one gracefully placed on either side of the vessel. The domed lid, topped with a relief lotus flower and a flaming ushnisha knob handle, further enhances its allure. Around the body, seven ovoid panels of openwork brass showcase auspicious animals – dragons, deer, and tigers – each separated by delicate brass strips of scrolling flora. Further enhancing its refined aesthetic are brass bands of meander patterns bordering the top and bottom. Originally designed to safeguard ritualistic objects or sacred texts, this elaborate vessel now stands as a captivating and historically evocative display piece. Missing 1 animal plaque and 1 circular plaque on lid. Some indentations, abrasions, and surface wear, but otherwise, nice presentation with good remaining decoration and light patina throughout.
