East Asia, China, Late Ming to Qing Dynasty, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A large stoneware Martaban-style storage jar glazed in ochre yellow, featuring a relief dragon along the side and eight loop handles around the neck. Known as Martaban or Tajau jars, these vessels were originally crafted by Southern Chinese and Southeast Asian potters from the late Ming period onward and widely traded across maritime Southeast Asia. Their name likely derives from the port city of Martaban (now Mottama) in Burma. By the 19th century, these jars were widely prized in Borneo, especially among the Dayak peoples, who regarded them as heirlooms and symbols of wealth and status. They were believed to possess magical powers - able to fly, kill, or foretell the future - and played key roles in funerary rituals. So valued were they that British authorities sometimes confiscated them as punishment. In the 20th century, both local Bornean and Chinese potters began producing similar jars to meet continued demand. Size: 11" W x 22" H (27.9 cm x 55.9 cm)
