• Lot Description
  East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A striking pair of wooden Fu Lions, each vibrantly painted and highlighted with lustrous gilt detailing on the heads. The lions are depicted with elongated, outstretched bodies adorned in scrolling motifs, embodying a dynamic yet regal presence. These majestic figures were likely crafted as architectural ornaments, symbolizing protection and auspiciousness, and feature grooves and tenons on their backs and sockets on their undersides for mounting to a column or roof eave. Also known as Fu Lions, Guardian Lions, or Shishi, these mythological protectors are characterized by their exaggerated features - snarling mouths, bulging eyes, and curled manes - blending the imagery of mythic beasts with the likeness of Pekinese dogs.
