Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec culture, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. Two hand-knapped obsidian objects from the ancient Aztecs. First is a slender conical core with several vertical grooves coursing between the smooth bottom and tapered tip. Paired with this, the larger item is an oblong blade with sharpened edges, a flat bottom, and incredibly smooth surfaces. Obsidian was an incredibly important resource in ancient Mesoamerica that was traded far from its source in the volcanic regions of the Sierra Madres in Mexico and Guatemala. Condition
Both items have minor nicks to peripheries and ends, with light encrustations within some recessed areas, otherwise intact and very good. Great smooth surfaces throughout.
