- Lot Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit / Yupik, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A pair of snow goggles - also known as ilgaak - hand-carved from traditional materials: walrus ivory and whale baleen. These functional visors are designed with narrow horizontal slits to reduce glare from the sun reflecting off snow and ice, a vital innovation for preventing snow blindness in Arctic environments. The ivory goggles feature etched geometric lines - recalling ancient Punuk styles, while the darker pair carved from baleen show a smooth, aged surface and subtle curvature. Both have perforations at either end for stringing and securing around the wearer's head. Size of ivory: 5" L x 1.3" W (12.7 cm x 3.3 cm); baleen: 6" L x 1.75" W (15.2 cm x 4.4 cm)
This item is made of or contains walrus ivory and whale baleen. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and the Endangered Species Act (ESA), Alaska Natives are permitted to harvest marine mammals for subsistence purposes and to create and sell authentic Native handicrafts, which may include materials such as baleen and walrus ivory. This piece qualifies as an ESA-exempt item. Due to strict federal and state regulations concerning the sale and transport of ivory, this item cannot be shipped internationally or to residents of the following U.S. states: California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington.
