Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit / Yupik, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An Inuit-style knife composed of a thick, polished soapstone (steatite) blade bound to a carved walrus ivory handle with tightly wound sinew. The blade has smooth, dulled edges, suggesting it may have been intended as a curio rather than a functional tool, although its shape closely resembles that of a snow knife traditionally used for cutting blocks of snow or ice. The ivory handle is finely sculpted into the stylized head and forelimbs of a seal, a culturally significant motif for Arctic coastal peoples. Size: 10.3" L x 1" W (26.2 cm x 2.5 cm).
