Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 400 to 700 CE. A remarkable stone yoke showcasing tremendous artistry and technique, suggesting it served as a ceremonial representation of the protective Y-shaped guards worn by Mesoamerican ballplayers. Its curved central section features a captivating carved visage, likely depicting a jaguar or a ballplayer in a jaguar mask, distinguished by large, recessed eyes, a broad nose with curled nostrils, and a long mouth punctuated by recessed circles at each end. Far too cumbersome and heavy for actual gameplay, this impressive ceremonial yoke, with its beautiful carvings and rich iconography, likely symbolized the lighter, more practical wooden or basketry belts used during the ballgame. Size: 16.1" L x 11.9" W x 3.6" H (40.9 cm x 30.2 cm x 9.1 cm)
The Pre-Columbian ballgame originated in the first millennium BCE, most likely in the Valley of Mexico, and was regarded as not merely an athletic activity but rather as a ceremonial means of controlling or predicting the future. The ancients of Mesoamerica played ballgames in a sacred ballcourt space. Some cultures expected players to dedicate themselves to practicing the game and preparing for matches; however, other cultures forced war captives to play the game and sacrificed the losing team. Another custom involved using the possessions of onlookers as prizes for the victorious team.
