West Africa, Liberia and Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Mande group, Bete / We / Gere, ca. early 20th century CE. A carved wood mask defined by its dramatic facial features - modeled horn-like brow and cheek protrusions, round projecting eyes, and a gaping open mouth - all heavily studded with domed brass tacks. These expressive elements contribute to its intense, commanding presence, originally intended to heighten the mask's impact during ceremonial performances. Such masks were traditionally used in ceremonies to restore peace, cleanse villages of harmful spirits, and administer justice. It also played a role in war preparation, offering protection to the wearer and intimidating opponents. Carved from a dense, dark wood it retains areas of reddish pigment and darkened patina, with historic repairs using nails to reattach and reinforce piece on the top of the head. Mounted on a custom stand.
