A finely cast bronze figure of Dionysus, based on a statue discovered in the ruins of Pompeii in 1862. Depicted is a fully nude male with sandals, an ivy wreath gracing his head, gazing downward with one arm extended in a contrapposto pose and a goat skin draped over the left shoulder. Mounted on a circular base with a cavetto and foliate edge. Cast in multiple pieces, the seam on the right arm is simply an indication of traditional assembly. The bronze became a favorite souvenir of those embarked on the grand tour. Weighs 26 pounds.
Condition
Very good overall. Minor wear to patina.
