Hand-carved wooden mask attributed to the Bobo people of Mali. This tribal mask features an elongated, angular face with deep-set eyes, a long nose, and intricate geometric carvings across the forehead and cheeks, indicative of traditional Bobo craftsmanship. Two tall, finely detailed horn-like extensions rise from the top, adorned with animal hair, a feature commonly associated with spiritual or ceremonial significance. The mask is further decorated with cowrie shell earrings and colorful beadwork, enhancing its aesthetic and cultural value.
The Bobo people use masks like this in ritual dances and ceremonies, often associated with agricultural fertility, spiritual protection, or initiations. These masks are believed to embody nature spirits and are integral to their animist traditions.
