Chinese ink and color painting on patterned silk, after Jin Yinggui (金應桂), depicting Bai Yi Guanyin (白衣觀音), the White-Robed AvalokiteÅ›vara, seated in meditation upon a jagged rocky outcrop before a luminous full moon, framed above by gnarled twisted branches. The bodhisattva rendered in flowing white robes over a red inner garment, hair drawn into a topknot, with delicately drawn facial features in fine ink line. Inscribed and signed upper right: 延ç¥å…年三月錢å”é‡‘æ‡‰æ¡‚å¯«äºŽç™½é¹¿å±±å ‚ ("Painted in the third month of the sixth year of the Yanyou era [1319] by Jin Yinggui of Qiantang at the White Deer Mountain Hall"), followed by two artist's seals in red. Two further collector's seals in seal script to the lower left of the composition. Mounted in a later hardwood frame under glass. Deaccessioned from the Milwaukee Art Museum approximately 30 years ago. The inscription bears the date and signature of the late Song/early Yuan literatus Jin Yinggui (act. late 13th–early 14th century), Qiantang [Hangzhou]; the present work is most likely a later Ming or Qing dynasty homage rather than a 14th-century original.
Condition
Condition: Fair. Overall toning and discoloration to the silk ground consistent with age. Diffuse brown water staining and tide-lines throughout, most prominent in the upper sky/cloud passages and visible from the reverse as large circular tide marks indicating prior moisture exposure. Scattered pinkish foxing and surface accretions across the figure's robe, concentrated at the hem and lower drapery. Faint vertical creases visible in the upper portion. Inscription, signature, and all seals remain legible and intact. Mounted under glass in a later hardwood frame; frame with light surface wear and minor scuffing to edges. Backing paper with losses, small tears, and age-toning; original hanging wire present. Old paper label, partially torn, affixed to upper right of backing. Not examined out of frame.
