A Chinese silk-embroidered panel worked in the Peking knot or "Forbidden Stitch" (ç¦ç»£) technique, late Qing dynasty to Republic period, late 19th/early 20th century. The cream silk ground finely worked with a symmetrical mirror-image composition of large peach-pink peonies and lotus blossoms among trailing foliage rendered in shaded gradations of blue silk floss, the petals built up in dense fields of minute French-knot stitches characteristic of the Peking knot technique. Framed by wide lavender key-fret (meander) borders top and bottom enclosing stylized longevity characters. Set as the center field within a wider black silk surround embroidered in white and pale silk floss with prunus, bamboo, butterfly, and ribbon-tied scroll motifs in the Manchu taste. Mounted under glass within a faux-bamboo carved giltwood frame. Reverse retains a typed paper note referencing the Forbidden Stitch technique and contains an envelope of provenance documentation.
Condition
Good. Embroidery retains strong color and intact stitch work with only minor age-toning to the cream silk ground; the outer black silk surround with light fading and a few thread losses to high points. Frame with scattered rubbing to the gilding. Backing paper intact with one small tear at upper edge.
