Exceptionally fine minute painting in colors with gold highlights on toned rice paper, signed along the right: Obikonomikoto (an imperial family member of Emperor Sujin, the 10th Emperor of Japan reigning from 97-30BC) / Hokuroku (corresponding to the present-day prefectures including Niigata, Toyama Ishikawa and Fukui) / General." and in the upper part: "Serving during the era of Emperor Sujin, he was designated as the Commander-in-chief of the Hokurokudou (northern regions) and responsible for the subjugation of Takehaniyasuhiko and the kinsmen of Emperor Kogen during their attempted coup. Before long, he brought order to the unruly elements of the northern regions and made his triumphant return to the capital."
