Late 19th / early 20th century carved hardwood pedestal desk in two parts, comprising a removable upper structure and lower desk base. The upper section features an elaborately openwork-carved crest rail of writhing dragons amid foliate scrolls, centered by a recessed bridge and flanked by twin cabinet pedestals, each fitted with a carved-panel cupboard door, open shelf, and small drawers. The lower section has a rectangular leather-inset writing surface with beaded edge above a kneehole, flanked by twin banks of three carved drawers, each drawer front rendered with figural bird panels (phoenix and crane motifs) within scrolling foliate borders. The deeply carved apron continues to dragon-form knee carvings on cabriole legs terminating in scrolled paw feet. Executed throughout in a richly grained dark hardwood with deep relief carving.
Condition
Fair. Splits throughout consistent with age and humidity changes. Old repairs noted. Losses to high-relief carving on the apron, drawer panels, and dragon-form knees. One detached length of cornice trim from the superstructure is present (shown separately). The two-part construction separates as designed for transport. Original dark finish with overall wear consistent with age and use.
