A Queen Anne style side chair, English or American, mid-20th century, decorated overall in red japanned chinoiserie. The yoke crest rail above a vase-form (fiddle) splat decorated in raised gilt and polychrome with a robed Chinese figure within a pagoda landscape and a crane on a flowering rock beneath, the curved stiles ornamented with trailing floral sprigs. The serpentine apron painted with a central swag of polychrome and gilt flowers flanked by lattice-diaper panels. Raised on cabriole front legs with carved knees gilt-highlighted with foliate sprigs and terminating in pad feet, joined to the swept square rear legs by a turned baluster H-stretcher picked out in gilt rings. Drop-in upholstered seat covered in red, blue, and ochre paisley.
Condition
Good. Red japanned ground bright overall with minor surface scuffs; light rubbing and small lacquer losses to the gilt at the knees, feet, and crest rail consistent with handling. Two small abrasions visible on the front feet revealing the white gesso ground beneath. Splat and seat rail decoration retain crisp detail. Frame structurally sound with no looseness at joints; H-stretcher tight. Drop-in seat upholstery clean and serviceable; black underside webbing intact. No maker's label visible.
