Iconic mid-century modern side chair designed by Norman Cherner in 1958 and manufactured by Plycraft, Inc., Lawrence, Massachusetts. The hourglass-form back and saddle-shaped seat in molded walnut-veneered plywood with characteristic narrow "wasp-waisted" transition, raised on four splayed and tapering laminated bentwood legs in lighter wood with an integrated X-form cross-stretcher beneath the seat; brass and rubber leveling glides. Underside retaining the printed paper Plycraft maker's label reading "manufactured by Plycraft Inc., Lawrence, Mass. / designed by Norman Cherner" — the corrected post-1961 label that credits Cherner following his successful litigation against Plycraft, dating this example to the 1961–c. 1972 production period.
Condition
Good. Walnut veneer with rich figured grain and warm patina overall; scattered light surface scratches, faint rubbing, and minor wear to high points consistent with age and use. No chips, splits, or veneer losses noted. Legs and X-stretcher tight; joints sound, no wobble. Original Plycraft paper label present and largely legible. Plastic/rubber leveling glides intact.
