"The Bird Watch", enamel on copper, signed "Kenneth F. Bates", dated 1949; Vibrantly enameled panel featuring a whimsical scene of abstract cats observing a bird in a stylized, surreal landscape. Executed in rich shades of blue, black, and copper with iridescent detailing. Titled on a paper label verso. Bates was a prominent American enamelist, long affiliated with the Cleveland School and the Cleveland Institute of Art. Partial paper label from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, possibly exhibited or accessioned, inventory label "56-51-6" to verso.
Condition
The surface is in excellent condition; minor wear to the frame with losses to the glossy paint finish.
