Impressive figural sculpture carved in marble, depicting the mythological scene of Hercules wrestling the Nemean Lion, which was his first labor. The skin of the lion was impregnable, Hercules defeated the animal by strangulation. He would skin the lion with it's own claws, and wear the hide as his personal armor. Rendered in classical style, with detailed musculature and expressive carving. Mounted on a naturalistic rocky base. Weighs 75 pounds.
Condition
Visible cracks and restorations, particularly to the lion’s hindquarters and tail; repaired with filler and painted white to diminish recognition from the marble.
