Carved wooden figure from the Latmul people of the Middle Sepik River region, Papua New Guinea. The boldly painted face features traditional tribal scarification patterns, accentuated with white, red, and black pigments. The body is adorned with raffia fiber bindings, enhancing its ceremonial presence. The elongated lower section is stylized with bold black-and-white motifs, possibly representing a totemic crocodile or bird spirit, a central theme in Sepik mythology. The pointed extension may symbolize a hook figure (Yipwon) influence, linking it to ritual warfare, initiation ceremonies, or spiritual protection.
Condition
Good condition with natural wear and patina consistent with age. Some minor pigment fading and surface abrasions but structurally intact. Raffia fiber attachments remain well-preserved, but shading.
