Sino-Tibetan polychrome painted wood storage chest, late 19th / early 20th century, of rectangular form with hinged flat lid, the canvas-and-gesso ground painted in iron-red, green, gold and black. The front panel centered with a kirtimukha ("face of glory") demon mask flanked by scrolling peony and lotus arabesques on a red ground, framed by a black border with painted cosmic yin-yang roundels; the sides with stylized flame panels and the lid with a central red reserve. Hand-forged iron strap reinforcements at the corners and across the top, a pierced iron lock plate with hasp at the front, and a pair of ring handles at the sides for carrying. The interior of the lid finely incised and inked with passages of Tibetan dbu-can script and vignettes of the snow lion, tiger, garuda and other auspicious animals from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
Condition
Good. Overall surface wear and craquelure to the painted surfaces commensurate with age and use; scattered paint losses and abrasions to the high points; iron mounts with light oxidation. Original key not present.
