Two French Provincial carved oak hanging kitchen boxes, likely Brittany, late 19th/early 20th century. The first, a salière (salt box), with shaped and pierced foliate-carved crest centering a carved rosette medallion, the slant-front hinged lid opening to a compartment over a small carved drawer with later knob, the front relief-carved with a figural scene before a windmill amid scrollwork, raised on shaped cabriole feet with scalloped apron; the second, a farinière (flour or salt-cod box) of upright rectangular form with shaped pierced crest centering a rosette medallion over a spinning-wheel and crossed-tools motif, the front panel relief-carved with a Breton peasant woman in traditional dress and coif carrying a basket on her head amid foliate scrolls, with paneled sides, shaped skirt, and cabriole feet. Both with shaped backboards pierced for wall mounting.
Condition
Good. Overall age-appropriate wear, rubbing to high points of carving, and darkened patina. Scattered minor nicks and dings to edges. Hinges functional; drawer knob on salière appears to be a later replacement. No major cracks, splits, or losses.
