"Bizarre quack doctors treating incurable disease." Three woodblock prints, ca. 1853, on rice paper, floating hinged in three openings, signed and inscribed: "Bizarre quack doctors treating incurable disease (title) / Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi (a late-Edo ukiyo-e artist, also named Kuniyoshi Utagawa or vice versa) / caricature / Note: This three-panel nishiki-e colour woodblock print caricature was published in 1853 (the sixth year of the Kaei era). Through its comically grotesque depiction of the patients suffering from their affliction and the incompetent physicians attempting a cure, the work serves as a trenchant satire in that time." Double matted with silk upholstery and framed under glass in black finished rectangular frame with tapered cut corners, overall 27-1/4" x 49-1/2".
