Antique ATCO pocket barometer – compensated – Made in England – early 20th-century scientific instrument with original fitted case.
Description:
Offered here is a fine early 20th-century ATCO Pocket Barometer, Made in England, featuring a compensated mechanism designed to correct for temperature variations—an essential feature in precision barometric instruments of the period.
The circular silvered dial is clearly marked “Rain – Change – Fair” and “Compensated”, with a dual scale reading barometric pressure in inches of mercury (23–31) along the inner ring and altitude in feet (up to 12,000) on the outer track. The dial remains crisp and legible with fine graduation marks, complemented by a blued-steel pointer and gilt bezel.
The instrument is housed in its original fitted leather travel case, lined in deep purple velvet and retaining its original hinge and clasp. The case shows light exterior wear consistent with careful use and age, while the interior remains clean and well-preserved.
A superb example of British craftsmanship, this portable precision barometer would have been an essential tool for travelers, surveyors, and explorers during the early 1900s. Its combination of mechanical elegance and practical design makes it an excellent addition for collectors of antique scientific and navigational instruments.
