Antique London verge fusee pocket watch with key – silver case and gilt movement – early 1800s English craftsmanship.
Offered here is a fine early 19th-century English pocket watch, crafted in London, England, and accompanied by its original key and chain. This charming example represents the classic verge fusee design, a hallmark of English watchmaking excellence prior to the widespread adoption of lever escapements.
The white enamel dial is elegantly simple, displaying hand-painted Arabic numerals and a single gilt hand, giving the piece a minimalist, early Regency-era aesthetic. A faint radial hairline near the edge and light wear are consistent with its age, yet the dial retains a pleasing glossy surface and character.
The gilt brass movement is a superb example of early English craftsmanship, featuring a pierced and engraved balance cock, blue steel screws, and hand-engraved decoration throughout. The plate is beautifully signed:
“London”
and bears the watchmaker’s elegant script signature and serial markings, characteristic of bespoke English production of the period. The fusee chain drive mechanism — designed to equalize the mainspring’s power delivery — remains intact and is a defining feature of pre-industrial horology.
The sterling silver case exhibits traditional double-back construction with a hinged dust cover protecting the gilt movement. The outer case shows light patina and oxidation consistent with silver’s natural aging, while the accompanying key and short chain complete the set, adding both authenticity and display value.
This pocket watch winds and sets with its included key; running condition is untested and it is offered as-is.
English verge fusee watches from this era are treasured for their intricate engineering and ornate engraving. When accompanied by their original key and chain, they are particularly collectible.
Comparable London verge fusee keywind examples in similar condition typically sell between $600 and $900, depending on the maker’s signature and case metal.
This example, with its fine gilt movement and complete presentation, is valued around $775.
Offered for sale as-is, this London fusee pocket watch is a quintessential representation of English horological artistry — a mechanical relic from the dawn of precision timekeeping.
