Hamilton pocket watch – Silverine Dueber Canton case – 15-jewel movement – late 1800s American-made timepiece.
A handsome early Hamilton Watch Co. pocket watch, showcasing the precision craftsmanship that established Hamilton as one of America’s premier watchmakers. Produced circa 1897–1899, this example reflects the early mechanical excellence and durability that made Hamilton a trusted name for both railroad and professional use.
The white enamel dial features black Roman numerals, an outer minute track, and a sub-seconds dial at 6 o’clock. It is signed “Hamilton Watch Co.” in fine script and retains its original blued-steel spade hands. The dial presents in fine antique condition, with light age marks typical of its era.
The nickel-finished movement, serial 45872, is engraved “Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, Pa.”, and displays intricate damaskeening with fine machine-turned patterns. It features jeweled settings, a safety pinion, and bimetallic balance wheel—hallmarks of Hamilton’s reliable early production.
Encased in a Dueber Silverine case, stamped:
“Dueber Silverine Canton, O.”
Silverine, a durable nickel alloy, was valued for its resilience and polished white-metal appearance. This sturdy case, serial numbered internally, exhibits only mild wear and retains its factory engravings with attractive patina. Hinges and crown function well, and covers close securely.
The watch winds and sets smoothly at cataloging; running condition untested, offered as-is.
Early Hamilton Silverine-cased pocket watches were designed for durability and practicality, balancing precise mechanics with accessible pricing for working professionals of the Gilded Age. Collectors today value these for their American engineering, bright nickel movements, and robust Dueber cases.
Comparable models in similar condition typically range between $425 and $650.
This well-preserved example with clean mechanics and classic Roman dial is valued around $575.
Offered for sale as-is, this Hamilton Watch Co. Silverine pocket watch stands as a fine representation of American horological excellence from the late 19th century, combining durability, heritage, and timeless appeal.
