Antique Swiss 8-day pocket watch – .875 silver case – mechanical movement – “Ancre 8 Jours” – circa early 1900s collectible.
Description:
Presented here is an elegant Swiss-made 8-day mechanical pocket watch, notable for its craftsmanship and intricate engraving. Marked “.875 silver”, this timepiece exemplifies early 20th-century European horological artistry, combining beauty with durability.
The dial features a white enamel face with black Arabic numerals, ornate decorative floral motifs, and an exposed balance visible through an open cutout at 6 o’clock. The inscriptions “8 JOURS” and “8 GIORNI” (French and Italian for “8 days”) highlight its eight-day movement, meaning the watch was designed to run for approximately one week on a full wind — a feature prized in both travel and precision use.
The interior case is stamped:
“.875” (silver purity), “84” (continental hallmark), and serial number 1888960, confirming the high silver content typical of Swiss and Russian export standards. The movement is richly engraved “8 JOURS – 8 DAYS – GARANTIE – INTERCHANGEABLE – ANCRE – SWISS MADE”, surrounded by medallions depicting awards and medals — a common practice among prestigious Swiss makers to signify technical excellence and reliability.
This “Ancre” lever escapement mechanism, visible through the rear access, showcases fine hand-finishing and precise machining, reflecting traditional Swiss watchmaking of the early 1900s.
