Remontoir pocket watch – 14K gold case – 10 rubis jeweled movement – late 1800s European craftsmanship.
An exquisite late 19th-century European 14K gold pocket watch, featuring a finely crafted Remontoir (keyless-wind) movement with 10 rubis (jewels). This elegant piece reflects the artistry and precision of continental watchmaking from the high-Victorian period, when advances in winding mechanisms transformed horology into both a technical and aesthetic craft.
The white enamel dial is classically styled with black Roman numerals, fine railway minute track, and a sub-seconds dial at 6 o’clock. The dial remains in very good antique condition, showing only faint hairlines typical of age. The elegant blued-steel spade and whip hands contrast beautifully against the dial’s crisp enamel surface.
Inside, the movement is marked “Remontoir 10 Rubis”, denoting a 10-jewel lever escapement with bimetallic balance and keyless winding mechanism, which allowed winding and setting via the crown—a significant convenience in its day. The movement is attractively gilt-finished, with visible jewelling and hand-engraved detail.
The 14K solid gold case, serial number 32650, is handsomely engraved with period flourishes, consistent with late 19th-century European styling. The interior cover bears clear gold marks and the serial inscription, along with the maker’s marks (where visible), confirming its solid gold construction. Hinges are tight, and all covers open and close securely.
The watch winds and sets smoothly at the time of cataloging, though its running condition is untested and it is offered as-is.
Remontoir pocket watches from the late 19th century represent the transition from key-wind to modern winding systems. Their elegant engineering and gold construction make them highly sought by collectors of early precision timepieces.
Comparable examples of 14K European Remontoir watches typically range between $900 and $1,400, depending on weight, condition, and engraving detail.
This well-preserved example, with a clean dial and solid gold case, is valued around $1,200.
Offered for sale as-is, this Remontoir 14K gold pocket watch stands as a fine example of mechanical innovation and timeless craftsmanship from the golden age of horology.
Invoices totaling over $1500.00 must be paid by wire transfer or cashiers check.
