- Lot Description
From the depths of the Great Depression comes a gem of an artifact from the production of cartoons in the 1930s. This original pen and ink drawing is for a cartoon on artist board, quite possibly for The Saturday Evening Post, which is dated July 14, 1934. It shows artist's and editor's marks. The scene is that of a man jumping onto an ocean liner thinking that he has missed its launch, but the ship is actually arriving. Raymond Coe was a prodigous and well regarded cartoonist of his day, providing cartoons for a number of leading publications of the day including Life, Esquire, Colliers and several others, including either the Wheaties box or Shredded Wheat box, depending on the source. I have not determined if this cartoon was published, but by all appearances it was, and is a fantastic treasure from the past. It has Coe's name on the back, possibly in his hand.
